Dear readers,
Most of you will be closely following the news in Haiti and will share our worries and concern for the increasing crisis of which ordinary Haitian people are the primary victims. Also worrying is the apparent lack of interest of the European media and politicians, as Haiti rarely appears to be a topic of interest or concern. We are therefore pleased that in name of the Group Left of the European Parliament Member of Parliament Marisa Matias has presented a motion for resolution about the human rights situation in Haiti, particularly related to gang violence. This motion was discussed on Thursday October 6. The outcome of the debate is as of yet unknown, but we are including a link to the text of the motion: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/B-9-2022-0427_FR.html
As Steering Committee we are trying to inform our member organisations and the European population in general about the current situation. We regular publicize articles on our website, an example is the recent article by our representative in Haiti, Colette Lespinasse: Haiti and the international community: the big lie. In this article she is explaining that the leaders of certain international organisations (such as the United Nations Security Council) are telling lies and are neglecting the real reasons for last month’ widespread demonstrations. Even Haiti’s own foreign minister, delivering a speech in name of de facto president Ariel Henry to the Security Council of the UN, appeared to be talking about some unknown country instead of Haiti.
